Riverbank Erosion Control Grant Money Available to Residents on River Road

Dear Bridgeton Township River Road Resident:

We write to let you know of an opportunity to help preserve the riverbank in front of your home.

As you know, the Delaware riverbank has been steadily eroding.  With each flood, the Delaware Riverbank loses more ground to the river, bringing the bank ever closer to River Road.  Unless this is halted, we are concerned that PennDOT’s proposal will be to simply move River Road closer to our homes.

One option to slow the erosion is for all of us to plant vegetation that best holds the soil in place – that is, plants that will both survive and thrive in the conditions along the bank.

Earlier this year, Bridgeton Township received a generous grant of $3,000 from the Lower Delaware Wild & Scenic River Management Council to do just that- to help homeowners with buying plants.  In addition, we may have the option of having volunteers to help with the planting itself.

Please let us know as soon as possible if you are interested in either receiving plants for your own planting (again at no cost to you) and second if you are in need of help in planting.  For most plantings, fall is the ideal time, so it is important to take advantage of this grant now.  Once we hear from residents, we will have a better sense of how many plants and the timing for such planting.

I can be reached at gholby@bridgetontwp.org, or on my cell phone 908-797-4951.
